Running Real Telco Applications on top of an NFV Platform – Opportunities and Challenges

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

NFV becomes real with the migration of actual VNFs into the cloud. In this session, we will discuss the opportunities and added value in running a sample suite of applications - specifically EPC – on top on an NFV platform using Openstack.

The inherent flexibility of NFV allows for operational efficiencies such as dynamic creation of applications, service chaining, scaling and healing, while still enjoying the rich and flexible solution provided by the VNF management layer.

However, this new environment poses challenges as well, especially for Telco applications traditionally designed to run on dedicated hardware platforms and provide five 9’s reliability. In addressing such concerns, several mechanisms can be useful.  In this demo we will describe and demonstrate one such mechanism: the ability of the NFV platform to correlate hardware failures to virtual resources to affected application. Once correlated, the applications can be alarmed of the situation and take effective actions based on the information provided. Furthermore, this mechanism is also used in support of Root Cause Analysis (RCA), assisting the NFV management layer in determining where VNF problems originate from.
