Isn't it Ironic? The Bare Metal Cloud

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

When you think of the cloud, do you think of the principles by which
cloud computing has enabled a rapid change in application development
-- principles like elasticity and self-service?

Or do you think that clouds are too slow for your app -- because they
have shared resources, expose you to noisy neighbors, or run in a
virtual machine?

These principles have fueled the dev/ops movement, and are now fueling
the infrastructure-as-code movement which has grown from that. Such
flexibility was widely unavailable just 10 years ago because it is
predicated on easy access to elastic, self-service,
programatically-controllable infrastructure. In other words, The
Cloud.

However, virtualization is not the only way to provide this.

I’d like to show you an open source cloud platform that can deliver
physical machines through the same API as virtual machines. You get
your very own real, physical, bare metal server in just a few minutes!
It even comes with a kitten [*].

I will cover the following topics:
* brief intro (2 min)
* network and service requirements for using Ironic (3 min)
* some choices you'll need to make (5 min)
* operator vs user interactions with a bare metal cloud (5 min)
* control flow for starting a physical server in the cloud (5 min)
* further operations (10 min)
* automating the management (5 min)
* questions

[*] Actually, there's no kitten, but there are plenty of grumpy cats
in the cloud.
